By my standards (being jobless i.e.), it has been a long time since I posted something. That is the reason why I decided, even if I have nothing worth mentioning (never made sense in the past 21 years), I am going to post something today. After desperate seconds of thought, I finally came up with something.
The country's economy, as people put it, is growing in leaps and bounces. All that the SENSEX could do, up until a few years back, was going up a few notches in the first two days and then losing all the ground it made up, in the subsequent three to end the week exactly at the same point it started with (to the delight of many, who felt that as long as it ain’t going down, we don’t mind). In sharp contrast nowadays, all that it can do is move up like a rocket who’s ass is on fire. It shows one thing: We, as a nation are moving towards the elusive tag of being “Developed”.
Everything doesn’t matter what always comes to an end, so will this unprecedented growth pattern. Isn’t it our responsibility then, to try and sustain this for as long as possible???? What we need to do is to make our country a favorable destination for foreign investment. What is the first thing a foreign investor would look for??? INFRASTRUCTURE.
This is where public transportation takes centre stage. When I say public transport, I am pretty sure that anyone who’s been to the city of Chennai would have the picture of an overused (of course poorly maintained) MTC bus in your mind. Well, doesn’t it tell you a story? When we claim growth, don’t you think it should be omnipresent? Then why are these modes of transportation so backward?
Except for the Delhi metro, none of the cities have a public mode of transport, worth mentioning. All other metros have their own problems. The Calcutta metro rail system is facing serious financial crisis. They have problems over land acquisitions or to say the lack of it. The Chennai MTC system, do I even need to start? The monorail project is also on complete stand still as elections in the state have taken top priority. The Mumbai urban rail system at last looks like it would hit the road hopefully with construction beginning next year. This is the case of the four metros and it goes without saying that the state of affairs in other cities could only be worse.
With so many issues more important to handle, I just can’t understand why the politicians of today are so bent upon dividing the nation into smaller fragments, by bringing in reservations? Think of Olympics in 2016 at Chennai, with MTC buses still operating. The mind wanders.
ps: Didn't expect this when I said "please comment on the post" :

whatever said and done, our MTC is one of the best trasnsport providers amongst metros.. i agree that a lot needs to be done on the quality of service;
and the MRTS proj needs to be completed.. as it’ll reduce the congession on roads, and also reduce pressure on mtc buses..

@arun,
ya, it serves the purpose…..but the quality sucks. the average age of MTC buses now is eight when the rules say, buses should be replaced after 8 yrs of functioning..

as you say da….quality of buses need to be improved for sure…but as you know i think we have all learnt to accept this kind of lacklustre quality….or rather we dont have a choice…..nevertheless i think TN is one of the states best connected by buses….both inter and intra cities..
and bout the market, things seem to be rosey, lets hope the bull run continues for ever(obviuosly it wont happen though)……lets also hope that there aint terrorists strikes planned by osama on IT firms

@sudarsan,
terrorists aa??? one look at our transport system and the thought “could it get any worse”…he would rather save the bomb up for something more meaningful…
